DDE School Counselor Honored by Vera House
Thursday, August 3, 2017
Each year, Vera House educator Ginger Price meets with Donlin Drive Elementary second- and fourth-graders to discuss topics such as bullying, personal safety, and abusive versus respectful behaviors. DDE school counselor Sarah Riley attends each session to support the students, who may bring up personal experiences during the discussion.
“It’s important to be there as a counselor,” Riley said. “The sessions are developmentally appropriate but the topics can be sensitive and require some follow up.”
Price was so impressed by Riley’s tireless work for the children at DDE that she nominated the school counselor for a Vera House Special Appreciation Award. Riley was one of five community members presented with the award during the organization’s 2017 Recognition and Celebration Luncheon.
Riley was surprised to learn she would receive the award, but was quick to note that it would not have been possible without Price’s involvement in Vera House’s Youth Education Program.
“I have a lot of respect and appreciation for Ginger because the kids learn so much from her,” Riley said. “They hear her and they really pick up on what she is saying.”
Riley said she is impressed by the entire Vera House organization and the selflessness of the many volunteers who help victims of domestic and sexual violence. She looks forward to continuing DDE's partnership with Price and Vera House in the future.
